We have reached the half-way point in the NFL season, by now as fantasy owners you’ve already determined what players are most valuable and who is worthy of starting on your squad. The one thing that continues to be fluid aside from team defenses are the kickers. Kickers come in all different sizes and colors without much appreciation given, unless they are cut or begin missing chippies.

The most stable kicker over the last dozen years has been Sebastian “I love to eat” Janikowski for the Raiders. Ever since he was drafted in the 1st round, seriously what was Al Davis thinking, he’s been the closest thing to Mr. Automatic in the NFL. The Colt’s Adam Vinatieri has also had a long run with the Patriots and Colts. However, there is another kicker who I think will have a nice long run in the NFL and definitely worth a look on fantasy rosters if he’s still available in your league. His name is Steven Hauschka and he’s the kicker for the Seattle Seahawks. As the Seahawks kicker, he’s had an unlikely road to success.

Like most kickers, he’s a soccer player first who found his way into the NFL after his college days with the Wolfpack at NC State. However, he’s been with 5 NFL teams now, with one brief stop in the UFL along the way. It’s a unique path but it looks like he’s stabilized the kicking duties in Seattle after one and a half seasons in the Pacific Northwest. He’s made himself extremely valuable to the team for the last two seasons, where he tied the Seahawks record for most field goals in a game, by connecting on all 5 attempts last season in an upset of the eventual AFC Championship runner-up Baltimore Ravens.

This season Hauschka’s statistics are not exceptional, as his attempts have been limited while on a growing offense led by rookie quarter back Russell Wilson. That said, Hauschka is as accurate as it comes when given the chance to kick the ball through the uprights. In fact he’s perfect this season from under 50 yards, going 13 for 13 on field goal attempts. He’s got a strong leg and is certainly capable of making 50 plus yard attempts, where he has successfully booted one this season and averages around 50% on 50 plus yard attempts for his career. Once the Seahawks offense starts moving the football on a more consistent basis, look to add Hauschka to your fantasy squad. The Seattle Seahawks have found their next Josh Brown and should be around to stay for quite some time.

Fantasy Tip of the Week

Keeping it short but sweet this week, do not carry 2 kickers on your team. Seriously, you are not Taco from the League, monitor your team and never have more than one kicker.
