Our experts take a look back at some of the biggest disappointments of the 2011 Fantasy Football season.

This is a look back at all those guys you drafted and wished you never did this past Fantasy Football season. Below is a list of some of the biggest disappointments of the year whether it was injuries, bad seasons, or sleepers turned busts here are some guys you will remember for a while for all the wrong reasons. If you want to add to this list feel free to post them in our Fantasy Football Forum.

Chris Johnson had one of the most frustrating fantasy seasons in recent history.

Michael Vick PHI | QB

Last season Vick was a beast and helped numerous teams to a championship, it was not only his legs but also the fact he had his highest compilation percentage (62%) and lowest amount of picks (6) in his career. The thought on Vick heading into the season was if he can stay healthy he could be the reason you win your league so he went in the first round in most drafts. Well he stayed pretty healthy (13 games played) but just did not pan out. Vick had the idea of becoming a pocket passer which really hurt his fantasy value. His rushing touchdowns were non-existent and his rushing yards were down from a year ago. Now of course he did run but the expectations on the Eagles fizzled early and by the time Vick and his team put it together you were all but out of the playoffs. Heading into 2012 look for Vick to be the fifth or sixth QB off the board. (amazing considering he went above Rodgers in many leagues this past season)

Chris Johnson TEN | RB

Chris Johnson had one of the most frustrating fantasy seasons in recent history. It started even before he even stepped onto the field with his contract negations but if he slipped in your draft due to that you probably were all but too excited to get him at the end of the first round. Then the season started. At first everyone thought the slow start was simply due to the lockout and missing all of the shortened training camp but as it lingered owners started to get more and more frustrated. Johnson could not find the endzone (4 this year) and did not show that burst of speed he had in previous years for the first two thirds of the season and by the time he somewhat turned it around it was too late for your team or you finally accepted some low ball offer for him. My assumption is if you had CJ2K this past season you will not be drafting him next year. (scary fact here, based on all the injuries he might project out to a late first round pick again)

LeGarrette Blount TB | RB

We told you not to touch him in point per reception leagues but even in standard leagues Blount was a total bust. Rushing for under 800 yards while playing in 14 games. The Bucs as a whole team was a disappointment but what killed owners of Blount was the fact that if the Bucs got down by more than 10 points he did not see the field. They went into panic mode way too early and in my opinion that is part of the reason coach Morris lost his job. Heading into 2012 I think Blount is a great discount buy in your draft as he showed flashes and a new head coach might realize he needs to stay with the run a bit longer as the monster of a back Blount gets better as the d-line gets worn down. (side note his run against the Packers was one of the best runs I have ever seen in my life – yes watch it again, simply amazing)

Andre Johnson HOU | WR

I hate Andre to be on this list but since he was the first wideout taken in many drafts he had to make it. Everyone debated between Andre, Roddy, and Calvin and who should be the top selection, typically Calvin was rules out since he was suppose to be the one with the huge injury concerns. Well over the past two seasons Andre Johnson has been the one with the nagging injuries and Calvin not only has the best nickname in sports but is now considered the best receiver in the NFL hands down. If you debated between Calvin and Andre and went Andre you are still probably kicking yourself.

Darren McFadden OAK | RB

If you listened to us heading into the season we told you to stay away from McFadden as he always seems to get hurt and you probably cursed us at first because McFadden was playing out of his mind but then it happened – he got hurt. So he is a disappointment for this reason because a) he was playing great but also b) his injury lingered so long and it seemed that he might play each week making you hold onto hope your stud back would be back soon, but that day never came. He went out in week seven and never made it back onto the field. Next year Bush might have a new home as he is a free agent but McFadden is the same huge risk huge reward option that I would not touch before the 4th maybe 5th round in a 10 team standard league.

Mario Manningham NYG | WR

We told you the number two wideout on the GMen is going to have a monster season – little did we know that would be Cruz and not Manningham. When Steve Smith left the Giants we figured Manningham was primed for a breakout campaign but in stepped Victor Cruz and Manningham became the odd man out in terms of the receiving core. Manningham went from one of our favorite sleepers to one of our personal biggest busts/disappointments.

Peyton Hillis CLE | RB

Madden curse, Madden curse, Madden curse – Hillis being a headache this season is a huge understatement. He missed a game with strep throat, then it was rumored his agent told him to sit out, then he missed some more time with a leg injury, had drama with the head coach, and oh played terrible when he got into the game. Hillis was a beast in 2010 averaging 4.4 yards a carry and found pay dirt 13 times in 2011 he barely broke 3.5 yard a carry and could not find the endzone. By the end of the year the Browns pasted on giving Hillis a huge deal, and no one blamed them for it.

Miles Austin DAL | RB

Austin started 2011 with a banged and had a few huge games early then he got hurt. Now injuries are injuries but the reason his was so tough was it seemed to last forever and each week he missed Robinson got that much better. Heading into 2012 however, I believe Austin is the man for the Boys and should be drafted that way ahead of Dez and ahead (if he is still there as he is a free agent) Robinson.

Mike Williams TB | WR

Williams had a nice rookie campaign so everyone assumed the kid would only be better year two. Well defenses realized he was the best player on the team in terms of a receiving option and just rolled the safety over the top every play. Williams could not beat the double teams and ended the year with the same amount of catches (65) almost 200 less yards, 8 less touchdowns than his rookie season. Williams was definitively a disappointment but could be a value next season in non ppr leagues (he is not a high volume pass catcher)

Jahvid Best DET | RB

This is my personal disappointment – I loved Best coming into the year and bought into the hype when the rookie the Lions drafted went down for the year. I saw that as a huge reason why Best would become this season Arian Foster. Now the injury issue was always a concern but I doubt anyone assumed a concussion was going to knock him out for the season. Going forward Best will be splitting with LeShoure in 2012 and even I will now be concerned as the concussion problem was a major one and there were questions all year long with Best should ever step back onto a football field.

Below is a list of some of the biggest surprises of the 2011 Fantasy Football season. If you want to add to this list feel free to post them in our Fantasy Football Forum.

Cam Newton virtually rewrote the book about rookie quarterbacks in fantasy.

Marshawn Lynch SEA | RB

After an extremely slow start Lynch went nuts in the second half of the season and ended as a top 10 fantasy running back. From week 8 on Lynch was the hottest running back in the league, and we saw why he is said to be in “Beast Mode”. It will be interesting to see how much love Lynch gets in next years drafts, but we have to imagine that he will probably be a late first early second round pick. Lynch will be 26 this year so he is getting pretty old in running back years, but he still has some tread left on his tires.

Reggie Bush MIA | RB

We liked Bush going into this year, but we wrote him off after a slow start. It looked like Thomas was going to take over as the featured back, and Bush was going to go back to being a third down specialist. After Thomas got banged up Bush took full advantage of the extra carries and proved he can be an every down back. He played in 15 games and had his first career 1,000 rushing yard season. Bush is still somewhat of a scary pick moving forward, but he offers a ton of potential value in PPR leagues.

Jimmy Graham NO | TE

Graham was my favorite sleeper tight end coming into the year, but he exceeded everyones expectations. He ended the year as the 2nd fantasy tight end, while racking up 99 catches for over 1300 yards and 11 TDs. Graham is a matchup nightmare and he will be an early pick in next years drafts. It wouldn’t even surprise me if Graham is a 3rd round pick in fantasy drafts in 2012.

Cam Newton CAR | QB

We will be the first to admit that we were wrong about Newton and his fantasy potential in his rookie season. It wasn’t that we were questioning his athletic ability but rather his situation. He was joining a Panthers offense that was among the worst in the league in 2010, and his main weapon through the air was an aging Steve Smith who appeared to have his best years behind him. Not only did Newton prove us wrong, but he rewrote the book about rookie quarterbacks in fantasy. We would still express extreme caution with how much value you give rookie quarterbacks moving forward. Newton was the first rookie quarterback to be a no brainer starter week to week since the fantasy football era started.

View This Poll
online surveys

Rob Gronkowski NE | TE

Gronkowski was another tight end that we thought was a great pick in the later rounds, but 17 TDs was something that no one saw coming. Just like Jimmy Graham he is going to be an early pick in 2012 fantasy drafts, and he and Graham are rewriting the book when it comes to how much a top tight end can help your fantasy team. The Patriots offense still has Brady and a ton of other weapons, so Gronkowski and the Patriots offense should be in line for big numbers for many years to come.

Jordy Nelson GB | WR

Sometimes this year the Packers made scoring points just look so easy, and Nelson was one of the reasons why. The Packers spread the ball around a ton which explains why Nelson only had 68 catches, but he found the end zone 15 times. Nelson ended the year as a top 5 wide receiver and as long as Rodgers is the one throwing him the ball he should continue to have success.

Victor Cruz NYG | WR

Mario Manningham was suppose to be the Giants receiver that had their breakout year not Victor Cruz. Cruz took full advantage of the extra targets after Manningham got a little banged up early on in the season and he never looked back. After their bye week 7 he was one of the top receivers in fantasy averaging over 6 catches a game during that stretch. He has a lot going for him and he should be targeted early in drafts next year especially in PPR leagues.

Darren Sproles NO | RB

We all know Sproles is fast and he is a hard guy to tackle in open space, but he has never been seen as a great fantasy running back. In prior years he has had value in PPR leagues and leagues that count return yards, but in 2011 he had value in all leagues. He had over 1300 total rushing and receiving yards, 86 catches and 9 total touchdowns. Sproles is exactly what the Saints offense needed, and he was a big reason why the Saints had the 2nd highest scoring offense in the league.

Steve Smith CAR | WR

We had written off Smith coming into this year. He was coming off of his worst season in years, and now he had a rookie quarterback throwing him the ball. All signs were pointing to the Panthers having another rough year on the offensive side of the ball, but the exact opposite happened. Smith had an amazing bounce back year and proved that he still has some gas left in his tank. Smith has had injury issues in the past and he isn’t getting any younger, so he will be a bit of a scary pick in 2012.

Antonio Brown PIT | WR

The second year receiver out of Central Michigan was suppose to be a bigger part of the offense this year. However, with Wallace, Sanders, and Ward all looking for targets, we didn’t see Brown as being as much of a factor as he was. Not only was he a factor but he ended the year with just under 70 catches and over 1100 yards. He didn’t find the end zone that much with only 2 TDs, but with his big play potential he is a guy to target for 2012 drafts. Brown also handled a lot of the Steelers return duties so he has even more value in return yard leagues. He might not keep his return duties if they continue to use him so much in the passing game, but if he does then he gets a big bump in those types of leagues.

Forum Question: Which RB would you start in Week 16, Beanie Wells (@Cin) or LeGarrette Blount (@Car)? (view post by df2)

FST_Brent: Carolina is just terrible vs the run so I would say Blount has the higher upside but he also has the lower floor. Wells on the other hand has seemed to find the endzone one way or the other. Both are risky but I would go with Wells here.

FST_Dustin: At this point Blount is nothing more than a headache. If the Bucs can keep the game close and keep Blount in the game then I like Blount. The problem is, that is a big if. I think you have to go with Wells, because you know no matter what the score he is going to be the guy to get the touches. Blount is just too risky.

FST_Mike: The last time Blount played the Panthers he had just 19 yards on 11 carries. Now that was mainly because Josh Freeman was injured, but there is always that potential when going with Blount, especially if they are playing from behind since he is not really used in the passing game. Wells may have a tougher matchup against Cincinnati, but I still think he is the safer play this week.

FST_Mike: Both are nice starts this week, but I think you have to go with Eli. He torched the Cowboys last week and I expect a repeat this week against the Skins.

FST_Brent: Gonzo has been so solid this year I dont think you can let one bad game scare you off. I expect ATL to have to score quite a bit to keep up with NO and Gonzo is a great red zone option for Matt Ryan.

FST_Dustin: This is a true coin flip at this point. TEs are really hard to predict, but with these two this is a good problem to have. I am going to say ride the hot hand and go with Hernandez. I think Gonzalez could have a solid week, but I think Hernandez has a slightly higher upside.

FST_Mike: Tough call here, but I think Gonzalez is the safer start and I expect a bounce back game after only one catch last week. Hernandez should have a decent game as well, but I usually play it safe in the fantasy playoffs.

Forum Question: Which WR would you start in Week 16, Jeremy Maclin (@Dal), Darrius Heyward-Bey (@KC), or Nate Burleson (vs.SD)? (view post by schambers0789)

FST_Brent: Vick looked as healthy as he has been in a while last week and Maclin is still his favorite target. I just think he is the safest play as he is the most talented wideout of your options and he has the same upside as either of the other two WR.

FST_Dustin: Before the Maclin injury he was off to a great start, and I think he has the potential to end the season strong. Heyward-Bey and Burleson are coming off solid games, but I think Maclin has the biggest upside. He has a decent matchup and I think the Eagles should be able to put up some points this week against the Cowgirls.

FST_Mike: Both Vick and Maclin appeared to be healthy during the Jets game last week and the Eagles have a nice matchup against the Cowboys that could turn into a shootout. Maclin’s last TD was in Week 8 against the Cowboys so hopefully history will repeat itself. I’d go Maclin.

Forum Question: Which QB would you start in Week 16, Tony Romo (vs.Phi) or Philip Rivers (@Det)? (view post by lookitsmrchris)

FST_Brent: This one is as close as it gets and I had both Rivers and Romo as a must start in my start/sit article this week. So as a tie breaker I will go with the guy that is playing at home. It is a huge game for the Lions so the fact Rivers is on the road might affect him. Not a huge reason but that breaks the tie for me – Romo is my play.

FST_Dustin: This one is extremely close, but I am going to give the slight edge to Romo as well. He has been more consistent this year when it comes to his TD totals, and I think he will be able to have a solid game against the Eagles.

FST_Mike: Very close call, but I would give the edge to Romo. Both QBs are playing well lately, but Romo has only had two games where he threw two or more interceptions, while Rivers has had seven. That being said, I think Romo is the safer play this week.

Tony Romo has thrown 18 touchdowns over his last seven games while only being picked off twice during that stretch.

CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK is here. If you have been reading this article I have had some good calls and some bad ones (not bragging here but a ton of the calls have been dead on – I mean a six week straight pick-up and play defenses that scored a TD was a nice run) If you made it to your championship I am sure you have studs so prior to reading this just know, don’t sit them now and over think it. I want to thank everyone for coming to our site during the football season – now let’s get you that championship! If you have any start’em sit’em questions feel free to post them in our Fantasy Football Forum.

Tony Romo has thrown 18 touchdowns over his last seven games while only being picked off twice during that stretch.

Running Backs

Donald Brown IND vs. HOU | Sit’em

Coming off a career high of 161 rushing yards you might be thinking it is time to start Brown over one of your studs (see Peterson below). I would not have the guts to make that call and in your championship game I dont think you can sit your studs. Brown was well on his way to a solid fantasy day then had an 80 yard touchdown run that put him over the top, I am not calling his performance a fluke but just know that when setting your roster this week. I think Brown could be an alright flex play but Houston is coming off a loss where Carolina ran all over them – they are not that bad at stopping the run and I feel they will be motivated to shut down the Colts offense.

Adrian Peterson MIN @ WAS | Start’em

If you are lucky enough to be in the championship with AP putting a dud of a game last week (the Gerhart two receiving touchdowns was a dagger to the heart) you still have to start him this week. He is a Hall of Fame running back and can always have a monster game. On a side note he has said he is going to show up this week for his fantasy owners. (have to love it when a player knows where he true fans lie)

Rashard Mendenhall PIT vs. STL |Start’em

The Rams have been terrible at stopping the run all year long and the Steelers clearly needed to sit Big Ben on Monday Night has he could barely move. Regardless if Ben plays or not this week I believe the Steelers run the ball a ton as the Rams are dead last vs the run giving up over 150 yards per game. Mendenhall is a top ten start and should not only have a big day rushing the ball but find the endzone at least once this week. As an update he is a little banged up and if the Steelers decide to rest him Redman becomes that top ten play this week.

Wide Receivers

Nate Washington TEN vs. JAC | Start’em

The Titans have said they will stick with Hasselbeck which is not the best news for Washington as Locker certainly favored him. With that said this match-up is too great not to get Washington into your line-up. Since Jacksonville lost three of their top players in the secondary a couple of weeks ago they have not been able to even come close to stopping anyone in the air. Washington has emerged as the clear cut number one option for the Titans (sorry Dustin I know you love you some Williams) and should have another solid day for your fantasy team.

Brandon Marshall MIA vs. NE | Start’em

The New England Patriots are last in terms of stopping the pass statistically speaking this season so putting a stud like Brandon Marshall in your line-up is something that you have to do this week. Marshall is the top receiving option for the Fins and is one of the most targeted receivers in football. Based on these facts and the match-up Marshall could certainly help you win your championship.

AJ Green CIN vs. ARZ | Start’em

I absolutely love this rookie and have written for a while now that he is match-up proof but this week I am writing about him since he is a little banged up. If Green plays for Cincy he should play for you. Last week he separated his shoulder but everything thus far is looking really good for him to start and due to how amazing he has been and how much Cincy needs a win I think he has to make your line-up.

Quarterbacks

Tony Romo DAL vs. PHI | Start’em

Romo has been on fire as of late and unless you got one of the top top guys I think you have to keep him in your line-up. I have already seen a question that has an owner worrying about the Eagles secondary – well this isn’t the preseason anymore and clearly the Eagles are not the best secondary in the league so start Mr. Romo.

Phillip Rivers SD @ DET | Start’em

This is going to be a shoot-out, plain and simple, and it is good to have quarterbacks that is a part of a shootout. Plus Rivers has been Mr. December again and playing his best football of the year in the last few weeks. Since they are playing in a dome that only helps the situation. I expect both teams to throw quite a bit and score plenty of points in this match-up.

Cam Newton CAR vs. TB | Start’em

Alright I admit it, Cam is the rookie of the year (I was hoping Dalton would come thru here but it is not even close) This is the most impressive rookie QB fantasy season I have ever seen and I think he ends on a high note this week. The Bucs have packed it in and Cam should be able to take advantage of it. All year they have put up fantasy numbers being top 7 in total yards and top 10 in total points scored, this week Cam will end on a high note.

Tight End

Jermichael Finley GB vs. CHI | Start’em

I know Finley has been frustrating beyond belief but the big question when Jennings went down was who is going to see all of those targets. The short answer is Finley, last week he was targeted 10 times and had a decent game, of course he dropped a ton of balls but that is what he has done all year. I think Rodgers will continue to look his way so if you made it to the finals with Finley on your team now is not the time to get cute and pick-up a hot hand like Jared Cook to replace him.

Defense

Cincinnati Bengals CIN vs. ARZ | Pick-up and Play

It is a must win game for Cincy and their defense has been solid all year long. Zona has been winning but they have not been blowing anyone out and the Bengals are going to be the toughest defense they have faced in a while. At this point if you have a stud defense you have to run with them but, if you have been playing the match-up game, going with a team that needs a win is not the worst thing you can do. (plus they have played better at home this year)

If you have any start’em sit’em questions feel free to post them in our Fantasy Football Forum.

Waiver Wire is our weekly look at players available in many leagues that could have an immediate impact on your fantasy roster, or simply just players to keep on your radar. We’ll be here all season to let you know which players to watch, who to ignore, and most importantly, who to pick up. If you have any waiver wire questions, feel free to post them in our Fantasy Football Forum.

Add in all Leagues

Kahlil Bell CHI | RB

Bell looked good week 15, and I think he is a nice play week 16 against the Packers. The Bears will more than likely be playing from behind, and Bell has 5 catches in each of his last two games. At this point I think he has more value than Barber in all leagues, but even more so in PPR leagues. (about 5% owned)

Demaryius Thomas DEN | WR

Thomas continues to impress as he has quickly become Tebow’s favorite target. The Broncos play the Bills week 16 and they should be able to put up a lot of points. They might focus a little more on the run this week against the terrible Bills run D, but I think Thomas is still an interesting play. (about 35% owned)

Add in Deeper Leagues

Christopher Ivory NO | RB

Ivory continues to get a lot of touches for the Saints offense, and he could see a similar workload week 16 if Ingram misses another game. He isn’t going to give you any receptions, and he has a tough matchup, but if you are desperate for a RB he should be good for 15+ touches. (about 5% owned)

Jamie Harper TEN | RB

There have been mixed reports about Chris Johnson and his status for week 16, but you might want to pick up Harper just in case. He only has 11 touches on the entire season, but this rookie out of Clemson could see a lot of work if Johnson is forced to miss the last week of the fantasy season. (about 5% owned)

Jabar Gaffney WAS | WR

Gaffney is quietly putting together a great season. He is one pace for about 1,000 yards and 5 TDs, but he is only owned in about half of all fantasy leagues. He has been awesome since Davis was suspended, and he could have another good game against the Vikings week 16. (about 55% owned)

Lance Ball DEN | RB

McGahee got a little banged up against the Pats, and Ball looked great in his absence. Fox didn’t seemed concerned about McGahee’s injury, but Ball might get more work next week. The Bills are terrible against the run, and I think all Denver running backs could have a big game. (about 15% owned)

Cincinnati CIN | DEF

The Cardinals give up the 7th most points to fantasy defenses, and I think the Bengals D should be a solid play this week. The Bengals are a top 10 fantasy defense, but they aren’t getting a ton of respect in the fantasy world. The Cardinals have been playing better as of late, but the Bengals should be able to hold them to a low point total. (about 70% owned)

Minnesota MIN | DEF

The Vikings are 3rd in the league in sacks per game, and they should be able to get some sacks on Grossman this week. The Redskins give up a lot of sacks and Grossman loves to make bad decisions when under pressure. I think the Skins will be able to put up some points, but I think there will be a few sacks and turnovers in there as well. (about 20% owned)

Jason Pierre-Paul NYG | D

Pierre-Paul is putting together a great season, but he is still available in a lot of IDP leagues. He has been amazing in the last two weeks, and I think he should be in line for another big game against the Jets. In his last 2 games he has 3 sacks and over 20 total tackles. (about 60% owned)

FST_Brent: When Eli stated he should be considered in the same class as Brady before the season started everyone laughed – but quietly he is on pace to break Dan’s passing record along with Brady, Rodgers, and Brees. He is playing the best football of his life and if anyone watched the Skins/Pats game last week it was clear the Skins have given up. The Skins might be one of the worst tackling teams in football so any pass Eli makes could go to the house.

FST_Dustin: This is a coinflip, but I give the slight edge to Romo. I think the Cowboys are going to put up a lot of points against the Bucs, and Romo should have a big game.

FST_Mike: I think both are solid starts this week, but I would go with Eli at home against the Skins. The Skins have been torched through the air lately and this could turn into a shoot out.

Forum Question: Which QB would you start in Week 15, Eli Manning (vs.Was) or Matt Ryan (vs.Jac)? (view post by kalog13)

FST_Brent: So I love both as written about in the start/sit post but out of the two I think the play is Manning. He is having the best season of his life and I think the Skins don’t care anymore. Teams break tackles vs them as if they were a high school team. I would go Eli as anyone (and Manningham is finally back) can break tackles and take it to the house at anytime.

FST_Dustin: Eli has been an awesome fantasy QB this year and I think he has to be your play. The Jags have a pretty tough D, and I think the Giants/Redskins game could turn into a shootout. Eli already has a career high in passing yards for a season, and I think he will add at least another 300 yards against the Skins.

FST_Mike: Both are nice starts this week, but I think you have to go with Eli. He torched the Cowboys last week and I expect a repeat this week against the Skins.

Forum Question: Which QB would you start in Week 15, Matt Ryan (vs.Jac) or Cam Newton (@Hou)? (view post by roccotherook)
FST_Brent: I love Ryan vs the JAGs this week but in the playoffs I don’t think I could sit Cam who got me there….I would go Newton as I would not have the guts to go Ryan.

FST_Dustin: This one is a total coin flip for me. I want to say Newton is the safer play, but his matchup is a tough one. Ryan is at home, but he has a somewhat of a tricky matchup against the Jags. The Jags are a little banged up on D, but they are still going to give the Falcons a hard time. I know Ryan is on a short week, but that doesn’t really effect my decision because the Jags D is on a short week as well. This is a coin flip but I am going to give the tie breaker to the home team. My vote is for Matty Ice at home.

FST_Mike: Tough call here. I think Matt Ryan is a nice start this week at home against Jacksonville. However, Cam Newton may still be the safer play because of his rushing ability and I typically go with the safer play in the playoffs.

FST_Brent: Wow this is close – Cams legs make him the safer play but based on the game Romo is coming off of and the match-up I think you have to go with him here. It is a must must win game for Romo and the Boys so no letting up – they will score as many points as possible.

FST_Dustin: Newton has a tough matchup and Romo is coming off his best game of the season. Newton has been great this year, but Romo is my pick. He has the easier matchup, and more weapons on offense.

FST_Mike: Cam has a touch matchup against the Texans, but should still get it done on the ground. However, I think you have to go with Romo here. The Cowboys have a full arsenal of healthy receivers and are competing for a playoff spot so they should be playing with some motivation.

Forum Question: Which QB would you start in Week 15, Tim Tebow (vs.NE) or Matthew Stafford (@Oak)? (view post by itsrichardbd)

FST_Brent: Insane that you just grabbed Tebow off the wire. But, I would still go Stafford here – he has a nice match-up as well and I think has a higher ceiling than Tebow. Gut call here but at least two TDs to Calvin this week.

FST_Dustin: In some cases I think Tebow is worth the gamble, but not in this one. The Raiders give up a ton of yards and points as well as the Pats. So I say go with the safer pick in Stafford. Trust me when I say I really want to pick Tebow in this one, but it’s just too much of a gamble in my opinion. Good luck this week.

FST_Mike: Tim Tebow has a nice matchup this week against the Patriots horrible secondary. However, Stafford has a decent matchup as well and is a much safer play this week. You definitely want to try to limit risks, especially in the playoffs.

TIm Tebow has a favorable Week 15 matchup against the Patriots, who have given up the most passing yards in the NFL this year.

Since we are fully engulfed in the playoffs I am going to switch up this article just slightly. If you are in the second round of your playoffs you certainly have a strong team which means now is not the time to be picking up free agents starting them over your proven players. This week I just went over a few players with good match-ups that I like as a start, of course if you have stud players keep them in your line-up, this article should help you more with your flex decisions. If you have any start’em sit’em questions feel free to post them in our Fantasy Football Forum.

TIm Tebow has a favorable Week 15 matchup against the Patriots, who have given up the most passing yards in the NFL this year.

Running Backs

Beanie Wells ARZ vs. CLE |Start’em

Wells has been up and down all year but if you have made it this far his inconsistent performances I think you have to roll him out this week. The Browns have yielded a ton of points to running backs all year long and I would expect the same this week. Wells has a good chance to break the 100 yard mark and an even better chance to find the endzone this week.

Reggie Bush MIA @ BUF | Start’em

What a pleasant surprise Reggie Bush has been this year. Last week he eclipsed 100 yards making him a great asset to the Fins and your fantasy team. In point per reception formats his value is even more increased. The match-up with the Bills is a favorable one and being it is December one can expect both teams to turn to the run in Buffalo.

Cedric Benson CIN @ STL | Start’em

The Rams have been just dreadful against the run and last Monday Night Mr. Lynch proved once again they can stop no one. Typically the D-Line is broken down by the second half and huge holes are present for any back attacking them. This week Cincy is in a must win game and will be sure to control the clock with the run game. Benson is not going to break any long runs off but should get some nice chucks in the second half, if Cincy finds themselves anywhere near the goalline expect a TD plunge from Benson.

Wide Receivers

Calvin Johnson DET @ OAK |Start’em

Crazy Right? To even have to suggest you starting Calvin in the playoffs. But if you own him, you have been vastly disappointed with him over the last five weeks. I am here to reassure you – start your studs, Calvin will just fine, don’t over think it, he is still one of the best fantasy wideouts in the game.

Miles Austin DAL @ TB | Start’em

Miles came back last week and by accounts looked great. He found the endzone and was targeted more than any other wideout for the Cowboys. This week he has a nice match-up with the Bucs and should be Tony Romo’s favorite target again. In a bold bold call this week I would start him over Robinson even as I figure the Bucs to roll coverage on him leaving one on one for Austin all game.

Julio Jones ATL vs. JAC | Start’em

Jones and Roddy’s match-up is my favorite for any receiver this week. The Jags secondary was terrible to start off with and now they are missing there three best players in the secondary. I would not start Jones over a guy like Calvin of course, but if you are looking for a high upside flex play – look no farther.

Quarterbacks

Matt Ryan ATL vs. JAC | Start’em

Clearly if I love the match-up for Roddy and Julio then Matt Ryan is one of my favorite starts of the week. He has been playing lights out and the Falcons is letting him air it out more and more in each passing week. This week he is at home where he typically plays better, personally I am starting him over Vick in one league.

Tim Tebow DEN vs. NE | Start’em

Tebow has steadily improved on his passing numbers each week (with a slight hiccup last week but he came thru again when it counted) and should have his best passing game of the year against the Pats. Their secondary is terrible, their best corner might be a wideout, and their linebackers are so slow. Tebow should come thru for you in the playoffs.

Eli Manning NYG vs. WAS | Start’em

When Eli stated he should be considered in the same class as Brady before the season started everyone laughed – but quietly he is on pace to break Dan passing record along with Brady, Rodgers, and Brees. He is playing the best football of his life and if anyone watched the Skins/Pats game last week it was clear they have given up. The Skins might be one of the worst tackling teams in football so any pass Eli makes could go to the house.

Tight End

Owen Daniels HOU vs. OAK | Start’em

Daniels had 100 yards last week and was targeted a ton of time by the rookie QB. (who looked pretty good might I add) I expect more of the same this week as he seemed to be the safety net used and he does not drop any passes thrown his way. If you have a guy like Gronk or Gates don’t be crazy and consider him but if you have been rolling with two TEs over the last few weeks I think he is the best of that second tier Tight Ends.

Defense

Tennessee Titans TEN vs. IND | Start’em

I hope you listened to Dustin last week and grabbed the Titans defense – if you did, you start them. There is not a better match-up in football than facing the Colts at this point. Over the past few weeks all of the scoring they have done has come in trash time but since this is a divisional game I don’t see the Titans letting up at any point in the game.

With DeMarco Murray done for the season with a broken ankle, the Cowboys will rely heavily on Felix Jones the rest of the way.

With DeMarco Murray done for the season with a broken ankle, the Cowboys will rely heavily on Felix Jones the rest of the way.

Add in all Leagues

James Jones GB | WR

Jones is going to see some extra targets with Jennings out for the rest of the regular season, and this could put Jones back on the fantasy map. He has been extremely inconsistent this year, but with his big play potential he is always just one play away from a big week. He is still a risky play from week to week, but with Jennings out I think he is worth the gamble. (about 55% owned)

Felix Jones DAL | RB

With Murray done for the year Jones has been thrown back into the starting lineup. When healthy Jones does still have the potential to put up solid numbers, and he looked great week 14. The Cowboys play the Bucs next week who give up 140 yards on the ground each game. Jones will get a lot of touches and he should have a solid game. (about 60% owned)

Demaryius Thomas DEN | WR

Thomas is quickly becoming the favorite target of Tim Tebow, and he could have a 3rd straight solid game week 15. It’s going to be hard to put full confidence in the Denver passing game, but the matchup couldn’t be better. New England is by far the worst against the pass in the league, and Tebow should be throwing to Thomas early and often in that game. (about 5% owned)

Add in Deeper Leagues

Jake Locker TEN | QB

Locker might get his first NFL start next week against the Colts, and he could put up decent numbers. The Colts give up a ton of points and yards on defense, and the Titans should have some success. If you are in a 2 QB league or a really deep league, you should consider Locker as a pickup and play. (about 5% owned)

Donald Driver GB | WR

With Jennings out, there are going to be a lot of receiving yards to go around for the other Packer receivers. I think this will open the door for Driver to have value in PPR leagues, and he could be a decent play if you are desperate week 15. I expect Driver to get pulled early if they get a big lead, but he should be a safe bet for about 4+ catches. (about 15% owned)

Steve Breaston KC | WR

Breaston has been solid lately, and he has two great matchups to end the fantasy season. Breaston has 4 or more catches in each of his last 6 games, and the Chiefs should be passing a ton week 15 against the Packers. I doubt the Chiefs will be able to put up many points, but Breaston is a safe bet for over 10 points in PPR leagues. (about 40% owned)

Toby Gerhart MIN | RB

All signs are pointing to Peterson being back week 15, but it is far from a guarantee. Gerhart has put together two solid games in a row, and with Gerhart playing well that’s just one more reason why the Vikes don’t need to rush back Peterson. If Gerhart does get the start then he could be in line for another solid game. The Vikings play the Saints who give up a decent amount of yards, and I would expect Gerhart to get involved in the passing game as well. (about 50% owned)

Kahlil Bell CHI | RB

Bell got a decent amount of touches against the Broncos, and with Barber all but costing the Bears the game he could get even more against the Seahawks. It’s not the best matchup against Seattle, but if you are desperate in a PPR league Bell could be a decent play. He caught 5 passes last week and ended the game with 14 total touches. (about 5% owned)

Ryan Grant GB | RB

With only 11 touches Grant had his best game of the year week 14 against the Raiders. If Starks is forced to miss another game then look for Grant to continue to have decent value. The only problem with Grant is the Packers are going to pull him once they get a big lead against the Chiefs. (about 45% owned)

Colin McCarthy TEN | LB

The Titans rookie linebacker has played amazing over the last 4 weeks, and at this point he should be owned in all IDP leagues. McCarthy has been filling in for the injured Barrett Ruud, and it looks like the Titans are ready to hand over the middle linebacker job to their impressive rookie. (about 15% owned)

Tennessee TEN | DEF

The Colts continue to be a mess on offense, and the Titans should be able to get some fantasy points against one of the worst offenses in the league. The Colts have scored 10 or less points in 5 of their last 7 games, and they should have a tough time again week 15. Over the last 4 weeks the Titans are a top 12 fantasy D, and I think they could be a top 5 fantasy D this week against the Colts. (about 30% owned)

Seattle SEA | DEF

The Bears don’t have too many weapons left on offense, and they should have a hard time against the Seahawks. The Seahawks are a top 3 fantasy D over the last 4 weeks, but they are still only owned in about half of all leagues. Seattle doesn’t get a ton of sacks, but they do force a decent amount of turnovers. (about 45% owned)

Atlanta ATL | DEF

The Jaguars had a great week 14, but they should have a much harder time against the Falcons. The Falcons have a great run D, but their pass D could be better. Since the Jags don’t have much of a passing game I think they could just stack the box and make sure they stuff MJD. (about 35% owned)

Keep an Eye on

John Kuhn GB | RB

If the Packers decide to rest Starks one more game then I think that makes Kuhn an interesting guy in deeper leagues. The Chiefs don’t stand a chance against the Packers, so look for Grant to exit that game in the second half. This should give Kuhn a decent amount of touches in the second half, and there is still always the chance of Kuhn finding the endzone. (about 5% owned)

Forum Question: Which WR would you start in Week 14, Torrey Smith (vs.Ind) or Doug Baldwin (vs.StL), or Jeremy Maclin (@Mia)? (view post by rickeyp)

FST_Brent: I would rank them accordingly. Maclin – if he plays and regardless if Vick plays or not (really looking like he is a go). Smith – he has had almost as many points per game as Boldin but he is a big hit or miss guy and I like the match up this week. Baldwin – Hit or miss but much more often miss than hit.

FST_Dustin: Baldwin is too risky at this point so I am between Maclin and Torrey Smith. If Maclin plays I think he is your man. He has a decent matchup and he is clearly the favorite target of Vick (assuming Vick plays). If Maclin doesn’t play then I think Smith is a decent option. One guy I do like more than Smith this week if he is available is Heyward-Bey. There are a lot of banged up Raider receivers this week and Heyward-Bey might get a few more targets as the Raiders try to keep up with the Packers.

FST_Mike: I agree, it’s between Smith and Maclin for the top spot. Since Smith is more of a deep threat, he has been hit or miss this season, but against the Colts this week I think it will be a hit. Obviously keep a close watch on the injury report for Maclin, but if it sounds like he’ll be ready to go I would start him over Smith.

Forum Question: Which QB would you start in Week 14, Matt Ryan (@Car) or Michael Vick (@Mia)? (view post by conorn98)

FST_Brent: I am not a big fan of Matty Ice’s match-up and if you drafted Vick in the first or the second round it is due to this blow-up potential. I would not leave that upside on my bench and start Vick.

FST_Dustin: If the pre-game reports sound like Vick is pretty much 100% then I don’t see how you can pass on his upside. Those extra points he adds with his legs add so much to his potential each week. The Dolphins D has been playing ok lately, but I don’t think Vick and the Eagles will have a hard time moving the ball. The thing that scares me with Ryan is that we might get a heavy dose of Turner week 14 since Carolina is terrible against the run.

FST_Mike: Very close call here. I like Vick’s upside, but Miami’s underrated defense is hot right now, which makes him a very risky start this week. Also, keep in mind that Vick only had three TD passes and four picks in four games before his latest injury. I think Matt Ryan is a safer start but that comes with a lower ceiling.

FST_Brent: Tyler Palko is just terrible and will continue to start and be terrible this week since Orton will be out with a finger injury. Combine the fact that Revis will be on Bowe and I just don’t see how you can start him.

FST_Dustin: I really like Williams this week. The Titans should be playing catchup and throwing a ton and I like the potential of Williams getting a lot of targets. Bowe should get a lot of targets as well, but I think Williams has a much bigger upside and a better chance of finding the endzone.

FST_Mike: I think I’d rather take my chances with Williams. Tyler Palko at QB with Revis Island equals bench for Bowe in my opinion. Williams also has a nice matchup against the Saints since the Titans will likely have to pass a lot to keep pace in that game.

Forum Question: Which RB would you start in Week 14, Roy Helu (vs.NE) or Willis McGahee (vs.Chi)? (view post by mdy18)

FST_Brent: It is a match-up thing for me as well. I would roll with Helu (who got a million touches last week) vs a bad Pats Defense.

FST_Dustin: This is a close one I am going to add this as a poll question on our homepage. I think McGahee is the much safer play, but I think Helu has the bigger upside. The Patriots give up a lot of yards on D and I expect Helu to get a ton of receptions. I normally like to take the gamble, so my pick would be to go with Helu.

FST_Mike: I like Helu this week, especially in a PPR league. Even if the Skins go down early, he’ll be heavily involved in the passing game. McGahee is still a decent start and a safe bet for 20 touches a game, but I like Helu’s upside more this week.

Forum Question: Which WR would you start in Week 14, Santana Moss (vs.NE) or Damian Williams (vs.NO)? (view post by NyanCat)

FST_Brent: Out of the two WRs I think I would roll with Moss – everyone just seems to blow up vs the Pats.

FST_Dustin: I love Williams this week, but I think Moss is the safer play. The Redskins are going to have to pass a ton and with Davis out they are going to have to rely on Moss even more.

FST_Mike: Both have nice matchups this week since I think both the Redskins and the Titans will have to throw a lot to keep pace with the Patriots and Saints. However, I think the safer play is Moss, especially with Fred Davis out of the lineup.

Start ‘em Sit ‘em is our weekly look at favorable and unfavorable match-ups and how they might affect lineup decisions for your fantasy football team. Other than a few elite players, no one should be classified as a must start every week, and analyzing match-ups can go a long way to giving your team a weekly edge. If you have any start’em sit’em questions feel free to post them in our Fantasy Football Forum.

Running Backs

Rashard Mendenhal PIT vs. CLE | Start’em

I know if you drafted Mendy this year he has been a little bit of a headache with all his ups and downs however, this is a week to certainly start him. (it is just a nice side note that is the first week of the playoffs). The Browns are great statistically speaking against the pass for two reason. First, Joe Haden (by now everyone knows I love him) is just a stud but second and more importantly, the Browns are terrible against the run. These two facts mean that teams don’t need to throw too much since they always have their running game going. I expect a big day for Mendenhall this week so hopefully you get off to a great start week one of the playoffs.

Michael Turner ATL @ CAR | Start’em

If you survived his terrible showing last week and still made the playoffs you will be rewarded this week. Carolina yields the most fantasy points to running backs and have a tough time with bigger backs as they have allowed a ton of red zone touchdowns to backs this year. The Falcons need a win so they will exploit the weaknesses of Carolina aka the run defense so I expect a ton of Turner and a big day out of him.

DeMarco Murray DAL vs. NYG | Start’em

He was disappointing last week and you might see the match-up and think it is time to sit Murray and roll the dice on another back but, not so fast. The Giants are ranked 29th in total defense so teams have been able to move the ball on them. Murray is not an RB1 this week but I would have a tough time sitting him as he has proven himself since taking over the starting job. Also as an added bonus he is getting his starting full back, back, this week. This is the same full back that lead him to his record performance all those weeks ago.

// ]]>

Wide Receivers

Michael Crabtree SF @ ARZ | Start’em Deeper Leagues

I have been high on this guy for weeks in point per reception formats. He is being targeted more than anyone on the team and has been averaging over 5 catches in his last few outings. Not the best deep threat but if you are in a ppr league I think he is a nice option based on the volume of targets and the match-up. (Peterson is a great return guy, not a shut down corner yet…)

Pierre Garcon IND @ BAL | Sit’em

Don’t believe the hype with Garcon, I know last week he blew up for over 150 yards and two touches but that was due to the fact the Patriots (who have a terrible secondary anyway) went into a prevent defense very early on in the second half. If you were thinking of starting Garcon over an established wideout I think you will be very sorry.

Dwayne Bowe KC @ NYJ |Sit’em

Tyler Palko is just terrible and will continue to start and be terrible this week since Orton will be out with a finger injury. Combine the fact that Revis will be on Bowe and I just don’t see how you can start him. I could have just wrote: Palko + Revis = BENCH HIM

Quarterbacks

Michael Vick Start’em | PHI vs. MIA

Vick has not lived up to the where you drafted him, he is coming off an injury, and the Fins are playing great as late – so why is he a start’em this week? Because unless you have another solid option I cannot see you sitting Vick and his upside for an average quarterback (Ryan, Sanchez, Palmer, etc.). You drafted Vick for the blow-up potential on any given week and this week is no different. At anytime Vick could have a monster day and I believe he will be motivated to do so.

Andy Dalton CIN vs. HOU | Sit’em

This rookie has been unbelievable this season along with fellow rookie AJ Green but this week Green will be matched-up with Jonathan Joseph who I believe is the second best corner behind Revis in the league. This tough match-up for Dalton’s favorite target is almost reason enough not to start him but paired that with the fact the Texans always seem to control the clock with their run game I just don’t like the rookie nearly as much as I normally do.

Philip Rivers SD vs. BUF | Start’em

The Rivers we saw on Monday night is the Rivers that was drafted so high by you in your draft. I wrote about him last week and I will continue to stand by my thoughts on him. If you got him you have to start him as his ceiling is too high and don’t be nervous about the fact the Chargers are basically out of the playoff hunt, Rivers wants to end on a high note.

Tight End

Ed Dickson BAL vs. IND | Pick-up and Play

If you were a Fred Davis owner and looking for a spot start this week I think Dickson is a guy that is available in a ton of leagues that could payoff for you. I expect the Ravens to run the quite a bit but when they throw it they will not take many gambles, which means a bunch over the middle to the Tight Ends. Dickson has shown flashes this season so if you are looking for a guy to pick-up and play you could do worse than Dickson. (side note I do like Celek quite a bit this week – even more than Dickson but his ownership was too high for a pick-up and play, but if he is available and you need a TE he is a nice play too)

Defense

Detroit Lions Defense DET vs. MIN | Pick-up and Play Defense

The Lions had a bye, then the Packers, then the Saints, so they were dropped in a ton of leagues. Add in the fact Suh got himself suspended and they were dropped in even more. Well if they are available in your league go ahead a grab them for this week. They will face a banged up AP and it is looking more and more like Ponder will not play so it is all Joe Webb at QB for the Vikings. If you can grab them, they are a great pick-up and play defense this week at home.
