Let’s take a look at the top fantasy football waiver wire pickups for Week 1 of the NFL season. These players are available in many leagues and could have an immediate impact on your fantasy roster, or simply just players to keep on your radar. If you have any waiver wire questions, feel free to post them in our Fantasy Football Forum.

Running Backs

Fred Jackson BUF | RB

I know the 33 year old Jackson isn’t the sexiest player to own, but he should still be owned in all leagues. The guy had 1,200 total yards last year with 10 TDs and I don’t see his role changing in 2014. The only question is if he will stay healthy and even though he might not, I still think he is worthy of owning. (about 75% owned)
Recommendation: Should be added in all leagues

Carlos Hyde SF | RB

In my opinion Hyde is the highest upside handcuff heading into 2014 and that’s why his ADP was in the middle rounds. It’s surprising to me though how many leagues didn’t end up drafting Hyde. If he is available in your league then you need to find a way to get him on your bench. (about 70% owned)
Recommendation: Should be added in all leagues

Jeremy Hill CIN | RB

It seems clear that the Bengals are going to use Hill to fill the void left by BenJarvus Green-Ellis. He is going to get enough touches to be fantasy relevant and if Giovani Bernard gets hurt then Hill could be a top 15 fantasy running back. There is too much upside for Hill to leave him on waiver wires. (about 55% owned)
Recommendation: Should be added in all leagues

Knowshon Moreno MIA | RB

Moreno battled injuries for most of the preseason, but he is healthy now and playing great. The latest reports out of Miami are hinting that Moreno could be the leader of the committee at running back. Moreno needs to be owned in all leagues until we know for sure how this situation is going to end up. (about 70% owned)
Recommendation: Should be added in all leagues

Danny Woodhead SD | RB

It’s shocking to see how many leagues Woodhead is still available in. I know he is more of a PPR guy, but he still had over 1,000 total yards last year and 8 total TDs. His role for the Chargers should be the same as last year and there is no reason to believe that he can’t repeat those numbers in 2014. (about 60% owned)
Recommendation: Should be added in all leagues

Mark Ingram NO | RB

Every year that Ingram has been in the league he has had some preseason hype and every year he has disappointed. This year could be different though and in most leagues he is certainly worthy of a bench spot. Ingram looked great during his preseason action and this might finally be the year that the Saints give him a few more carries. Like always I expect the Saints to have a few running backs in the mix each week, but I think Ingram will lead the way in terms of number of carries. (about 50% owned)
Recommendation: Should be added in deeper leagues

Ahmad Bradshaw IND | RB

The Colts brought over Bradshaw before the 2013 season to be their featured back, but that never happened because of injury. He is healthy now and I think there is a good chance that he beats out Trent Richardson. The Colts have a great offense and whoever ends up winning that job will have solid fantasy value. (about 25% owned)
Recommendation: Should be added in deeper leagues

Devonta Freeman ATL | RB

It would be shocking if Steven Jackson stays healthy all year and if he goes down I think Freeman could be a big time fantasy running back. The Falcons are going to have a solid offense this year and there should be plenty of fantasy points to go around. All Jackson owners need to find a way to get Freeman on their teams, because once Jackson gets hurt I think Freeman could be a top 15 running back. (about 45% owned)
Recommendation: Should be added in deeper leagues

Wide Receivers

Justin Hunter TEN | WR

Hunter is entering his second year and he has breakout receiver written all over him. He had a decent rookie year and with Nate Washington pretty much done, this should open the door for Hunter to start. Hunter has looked great this preseason and I think he has a great chance of offer WR3 value this year. (about 70% owned)
Recommendation: Should be added in all leagues

Jordan Matthews PHI | WR

Matthews couldn’t be in a much better situation and I am a big fan of his upside this year. The Eagles are going to throw the ball a good bit and I expect that he will see consistent targets. I also expect the Eagles to use Matthews in the running game from time to time and maybe be a Randall Cobb type player for them. (about 35% owned)
Recommendation: Should be added in deeper leagues

Andrew Hawkins CLE | WR

Hawkins is a guy that I am excited about this year. The Browns offense lacks weapons and that’s not a good thing when an offense is trying to change to a west coast style offense. I think Hawkins will be targeted early and often and I think he will have value in both PPR and standard leagues. (about 25% owned)
Recommendation: Should be added in deeper leagues

Quarterbacks

Geno Smith NYJ | QB

I think the hate for Geno Smith has gone too far and at this point I think he is turning into a solid fantasy option at quarterback. The Jets added two solid weapons to their offense with Chris Johnson and Eric Decker and their offense should be much better this year. I am not expecting Geno to have an amazing year, but because of what he can do with his legs I think he could be a top 15 quarterback. (about 10% owned)
Recommendation: Should be added in deeper leagues

Derek Carr OAK | QB

The Raiders brought over Matt Schaub to be their quarterback this year, but after a terrible preseason they have turned to Carr. The rookie out of Fresno State is going to get thrown right into the starting lineup and it’s an interesting situation for him. The Raiders will more than likely be playing from behind a good bit this year and this could mean a decent amount of 4th quarter junk yards each game. (about 10% owned)
Recommendation: Should be added in deeper leagues

Defense/Special Teams

Pittsburgh PIT | DEF

The Steelers are at home Week 1 against the Browns and they should have a solid day on defense. The Browns offense looked terrible during the preseason and I expect them to be a mess most of the year. If you at all don’t like your defensive matchup this week then you might want to consider picking up the Steelers. (about 20% owned)
Recommendation: Worth a look as a pickup and play
